The constituent assembly took a decision to found and register the Bulgarian Orthodox Parish “St. Boris – Prince and Baptizer of Bulgaria“ in Berlin. During the same session, which took place on March 3th 1992, 6 p.m. at the Bulgarian Embassy in Berlin, the rules of the parish were accepted and the following members of the Parish council were elected: Georgy Sergiev, Pavlina Stoilova, Vasil Penkov, Alexander Lilov, Kiril Ezhkov and Jan Projkov. The parish was registered on October 11th 1993 (Reg. Nr. 13935).
Father Ljubomir Leontinow was ordinated by the late Metropolitan Simenon of Central and Western Europe on March 19th 1994 (Saturday of St. Theodore Tyron). Immediately after he was appointed to serve as a priest of the new parish in Berlin.
During the second parish meeting, which took place on July 1st 1995, new members of the parish council were elected: Tinka Wit-Maise, Ljubomir Bratoev, Kiril Ezhkov, Petar Bonchev, Georgy Sergiev and Petko Abadzhiev.
Despite the difficulties during the following years, the efforts of the parish were focused on the consolidation and the well-being of the “herd”. In the beginning, liturgies were celebrated only during the main feasts at the Bulgarian Embassy or at the church of “St. Jacob” in Berlin, Oranienstraße 132.
In 1998 the parish was given a church owned by the Protestant Church in Alt Schöneberg (Hauptstraße 47, Berlin) for its regular services. Father Julian Angelov was appointed as a second priest of the parish.
In 2000 the parish moved to the church of “St. Mathew” in Berlin, Großgörschenstraße 12.
On September 9th 2002, 10 years after the foundation of the parish and after three relocations, the parish was given the opportunity to use independently the graveyard chapel of the Jerusalem parish (Hermannstraße 84-90). In addition, the Bulgarian parish was allowed to use part of the graveyard.
After renovation, the church building was consecrated and nominated for cathedral of the Diocese of Western and Central Europe on May 29th 2005.
Since then the cathedral has continuously been renovated. Regular Sunday services are held throughout the year.
